Black Kids are an American indie rock band. They formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 2006. The group consists of Owen Holmes on bass guitar, Kevin Snow on drums, Dawn Watley and Ali Youngblood on keyboards and vocals, and Ali's brother Reggie Youngblood on guitar and vocals. After forming in 2006, Black Kids began playing shows in Jacksonville as a supporting act for bands coming through town, such as Tilly and the Wall, Elf Power, and Gil Mantera's Party Dream. On August 11, 2007, the band performed at Athens Popfest in Athens, Georgia. Black Kids' performance was well received, leading to attention from the rock press and blogosphere. Soon the band received coverage in NME, Vice, The Guardian, and The Village Voice, among others. Black Kids' demo EP, Wizard of Ahhhs, was released by the band in August 2007 via free download on their official MySpace page. On October 5, 2007, the EP received a favorable review (8.4/10) from Pitchfork Media, including a "Best New Music" commendation. On October 17, Billboard.com reported that Black Kids had signed a management deal with Quest Management,the company that manages Björk and Arcade Fire. The same month Black Kids participated in the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, earning the band exposure in media outlets such as The New York Times and USA Today. In November Black Kids announced tour dates in Florida and Georgia, and December shows in London. Rolling Stone dubbed Black Kids one of the ten best new bands for 2008. On January 8, 2008, Black Kids announced tour dates, including the Vice Live Tour, a February tour with Sons and Daughters, and a February and March tour with Kate Nash. The band is also slated to appear at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California in April, T in the Park in Scotland in July, and Camp Bestival in England in July[16]. On February 4th, Pitchfork Media reported that the Black Kids have signed to Almost Gold Recordings for distribution outside of North America. Their first single, a newly recorded version of "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You", will be released on April 7, 2008.
